Sam Altman’s AI-generated image of himself as an anime-style cricket player in an India jersey has sparked buzz among Indian social media users. Shared on X on Thursday, the tech billionaire’s avatar tapped into India’s cricket obsession, delighting some fans while prompting others to question his motives. Comments ranged from “Sam trying hard to attract Indian customers” to speculation about OpenAI’s $40 billion funding and its plans for India.

The chatter intensified as users noticed Altman’s recent focus on India. Hours before the jersey post, he praised India’s rapid AI adoption on X, calling it “amazing to watch” and “outpacing the world.” Days earlier, he retweeted Studio Ghibli-style images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These posts fueled speculation about a strategic shift, especially given Altman’s past skepticism. In 2023, he dismissed the idea of small Indian startups rivaling OpenAI, calling it “totally hopeless.” Yet, during a 2025 visit, he praised India’s AI growth, noting it as OpenAI’s second-largest market and expressing interest in collaboration.
